Meet Catherine A. Potthast

Catherine A. Potthast began her solo practice as Catherine A. Potthast, P.A., in 2019.    She holds a Martindale Hubble Peer Review AV rating.

Ms. Potthast practices civil litigation with primary emphasis on lead paint defense, insurance coverage disputes, environmental and toxic tort matters, and appellate practice.  She also represents owners of single and multi-family rental properties in litigation matters, and handles federal, state and local regulatory compliance issues and administrative proceedings.

Ms. Potthast counsels her clients on lead paint compliance and defends lead paint compliance environmental enforcement cases brought by the Maryland Department of the Environment.  She assists rental property owners, managers and contractors, in complying with environmental and safe work practice regulations.  Ms. Potthast handles general insurance defense matters and she has represented both insurers and policyholders in insurance coverage disputes.

In addition, she acts as personal counsel to policyholders whose insurers are furnishing them with defenses under reservation of rights, and she has experience in assisting policyholders and insurers in reconstructing lost or missing insurance policies. She has furnished insurance coverage opinions, and handles insurance coverage disputes in Maryland State and Federal courts.  In property damage disputes, Ms. Potthast may also assist in arranging alternative dispute resolution or the appointment of a neutral umpire to resolve disagreements as to the value or amount of a loss.

Practice

Ms. Potthast is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia. Formerly she was a shareholder/director at Nolan, Plumhoff & Williams, Chartered for twenty years and previously practiced law at Smith, Somerville & Case, L.L.C..

She began her career as a trial attorney defending medical malpractice, product liability, and general liability claims for insurers in Maryland State and Federal courts and the Health Claims Arbitration Office.  She is a former law clerk in the Circuit Court for Baltimore County for Hon. John F. Fader, and she also worked as a law clerk during law school for the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland.
